Mortgage Update Tuesday, December 30th

GMAC received $6B from the Treasury today, giving stocks a boost, as it will help prevent a bandruptcy protection filing. That would have been trouble for GM, as GMAC is the major source of financing for GM vehicle purchases. GMAC has announced that they will resume financing to a wider range of car buyers.

Consumer Confidence came in at a record low of 38.0. in sharp contrast to the 88.6 last year at this time. The Chicago Purchasing Managers Index, which is a good measure of the manufacturing industry, came in at 34.1, close to the expected 33.0.

Rates have been on the uptick short term, due to the selling pressure put on Bonds as stocks enjoy some good news, but the longer term view is for improving rates.
